February 22nd: Equal Pay Day in Spain

Reading time: 2

On February 22nd, Spain commemorates Equal Pay Day, a date aimed at raising awareness about the persistent gender pay gap and promoting actions to eliminate it. This observance was established in 2010 by the Council of Ministers to educate society on pay inequalities between men and women for work of equal value.

Current Situation of the Gender Pay Gap in Spain

Over the past decade, Spain has made significant progress in reducing the gender pay gap. According to 2022 data, the difference in average hourly wages between men and women stood at 8.7%, a notable decrease from the 18.7% recorded in 2012. This progress has been faster than in other European Union countries, positioning Spain below the EU average in terms of wage inequality.

However, wage disparities persist across different regions and sectors. For example, in Navarra, the gender pay gap is 18.54%, translating to nearly 6,000 euros less per year for women compared to men. Nationally, the average salary difference is 5,257 euros less per year for women.

Factors Contributing to the Gender Pay Gap

The persistence of the gender pay gap is due to a combination of factors, including:

  • Occupational Segregation: Women are overrepresented in lower-paid sectors and occupations, such as domestic work and social services.
  • Barriers to Career Advancement: The limited presence of women in high-responsibility positions restricts their access to higher salaries.
  • Unequal Distribution of Family Responsibilities: Women take on a greater share of household and caregiving tasks, which can impact their professional and financial growth.

Measures to Combat the Gender Pay Gap

To address this issue, it is essential to implement public and corporate policies that promote equal pay. Some recommended actions include:

  • Pay Transparency: Encouraging the disclosure of salary structures within organizations to identify and correct potential inequalities.
  • Wage Audits: Conducting periodic evaluations to analyze salary policies and ensure gender equity.
  • Work-Life Balance Policies: Developing measures that facilitate work-life compatibility, such as flexible schedules and equitable parental leave.
  • Training and Awareness Programs: Implementing educational initiatives to promote gender equality and combat workplace stereotypes.

The observance of Equal Pay Day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made and the challenges that remain in achieving pay equity. At BIOAZUL, we are firmly committed to gender equality at all levels of our organization, ensuring the active participation of women in all our activities and decision-making processes.
