2025 IWA RR Conference is organized by Wetsus in collaboration with Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University and Research. With this conference, they want to showcase and celebrate the experiences, lessons and results of more than 15 years of experimenting and upscaling of resource recovery around the world. Now it is time to transform these from concepts to business examples.
Resource recovery is a very inspiring topic but has not been an easy journey and many lessons have been learned in both upscaling novel technologies and developing new markets. Their ambition is to make this conference a meeting point between academia and industry to ensure that research and industry can learn and inspire each other, thus working towards scaled-up and impactful solutions. Wetsus and collaborates also want to put in the spotlight the future water leaders, the Young Water Professionals, and strengthen the link with policymakers to ensure that the potential of resource recovery is stimulated rather than hindered by legal frameworks. Shaping the future and improving the current practices can only be achieved by collaborative work. This event is the perfect opportunity to do so, via inspiring discussion and meaningful connections.
This workshop is jointly organized by BIOAZUL and Aquaminerals, with the support of the BOOSTIN project, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe program.
The workshop will address the challenges of bringing circular economy innovations in the water sector to market. Traditional markets rely on virgin materials that are abundant, affordable, and widely accepted, while residuals from wastewater face barriers such as contamination concerns, legal restrictions, and limited market acceptance. These obstacles make circular alternatives less attractive, as residuals retain their waste status unless they meet the EU’s End-of-Waste criteria—a complex and often unclear process that varies across countries.
The workshop will focus on two main topics:
Attendees will participate in interactive sessions designed to reflect on key barriers and limitations while learning from real-world experiences. The goal is to foster productive discussions and collaborative thinking to effectively navigate the challenges of bringing circular products to market.
Additionally, the workshop aims to create a Community of Practice focused on End-of-Waste criteria and innovative business models for circular products. This community will promote ongoing dialogue and knowledge exchange, continuing to convene in future events such as BOOST-IN webinars and workshops.
