“Axarquía Sostenible” concludes its journey by promoting the use of reclaimed water in subtropical agriculture.

Final Event at TROPS (Vélez-Málaga)

On February 26, 2025, the final event of the Axarquía Sostenible Operational Group was held at TROPS (Vélez-Málaga). This pioneering project has set a milestone in the management of reclaimed water for subtropical agriculture in the Axarquía region.

A Platform for Knowledge Sharing

The event brought together farmers, researchers, local authorities, and water management experts to share the project’s most significant findings. During the session, innovative studies were presented on the use of reclaimed water for pitaya and passion fruit cultivation, modernization efforts by the Algarrobo Irrigation Community, and digital tools designed to optimize fertigation.

Major Achievements of the Project

Over two years of work, Axarquía Sostenible has developed innovative solutions that contribute to the region’s agricultural sustainability:

• Use of Reclaimed Water in Subtropical Crops: Experimental trials with pitaya and passion fruit have demonstrated the feasibility of irrigation with reclaimed water, providing key insights into its impact on yield and fruit quality.
• Optimization of Wastewater Treatment and Reclamation: Advanced disinfection and water regeneration systems have been implemented in the municipality of Algarrobo, leveraging photovoltaic energy to reduce environmental impact.
• Experience of the Algarrobo Irrigation Community: Their efforts in irrigation modernization and reclaimed water use have addressed challenges such as marine intrusion and high water conductivity.
• Development of a Digital Fertigation Tool: Designed for avocado and mango crops, this application allows for precise fertilization adjustments based on the nutritional content of the reclaimed water used.

An Ending That Is Just the Beginning

Although the project has come to an end, its impact will continue to benefit the Axarquía region in the coming years. The results will continue to be shared through their networks and on the Axarquía Sostenible website.
