From BIOAZUL we are glad to announce the successful launch of the Water Efficiency Expert Group under Water Europe, marking a significant step forward in advancing water reuse, circular economy, and efficiency solutions. The inaugural meeting took place on December 10th during the Water Knowledge Europe and  brought together leading experts and professionals to set the stage for collaborative efforts in addressing critical water challenges.

Led by Rafael Casielles, Project Manager at BIOAZUL, the group aims to deliver tangible value to its members by fostering innovation, aligning with EU policies, and creating actionable opportunities for research and business development. During the meeting, Rafael presented a draft action plan with a clear focus on synergies and collaboration.

The launch of this Expert Group represents a unique opportunity to bring together expertise, innovation, and resources to tackle pressing water challenges. The group’s mission includes advocating for a Water-Smart Society and supporting the implementation of EU policies such as the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and the initiative for water resilience. By leveraging its knowledge of these evolving policy frameworks, the group seeks to create opportunities for innovations that are strategically aligned with building a sustainable and resilient water sector.

A key highlight of the session was the introduction of the BOOST-IN project, a Horizon Europe initiative led by BIOAZUL. BOOST-IN is dedicated to scaling up promising projects in water efficiency and the circular economy, showcasing BIOAZUL’s leadership in bridging research with practical applications.

The Expert Group will focus on several strategic objectives, including:

  • Promoting innovative water-efficient and circular solutions to enhance resilience and sustainability.
  • Supporting the implementation of EU policies, such as the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and the Water Reuse Regulation.
  • Leveraging EU-funded projects to create synergies and foster new R&D initiatives.

The inaugural meeting featured vibrant discussions about ongoing projects and initiatives, laying the groundwork for future collaboration. Members emphasized the importance of connecting policy and practice, with the group poised to act as a platform for knowledge sharing and capacity building.

BIOAZUL’s role in leading the Water Efficiency Expert Group aligns with its broader mission to advance sustainable water management through research, innovation, and impactful partnerships.
